Lung Cancer Awareness
Lung cancer is one of the most serious health issues today and is responsible for 1 in 4 cancer-related deaths. Every 2 minutes, someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, which makes awareness and early detection incredibly important.
The good news is that early screening can save lives. When lung cancer is caught early, the 5-year survival rate goes from 27% up to 64%. That’s a big difference and shows just how powerful early detection can be.
While smoking is a well-known risk factor, it's not the only one. In fact, 10-20% of people diagnosed with lung cancer have either never smoked or quit smoking years ago. Other risk factors include:
Exposure to radon (a naturally occurring gas)
Secondhand smoke
Air pollution
Workplace exposure to substances like asbestos or diesel exhaust
Genetic mutations or unknown causes
World Lung Cancer Day is a great time to check in with yourself and loved ones. If you or someone you know may be at risk, talk to a healthcare provider about screening options.
