Summer’s Ending—But Flu Season Is Just Getting Started

August is the time when summer winds down and families start preparing for a new school year. It's also a great reminder to check in on your immunizations. Whether you're getting kids ready for school or just returning to a more regular routine, this is a good time to schedule a visit with your healthcare provider to make sure everyone is protected!

One of the most well-known vaccines this season is the flu shot. We all hear about it each year, but have you ever wondered when it was developed or why it's so important?

Here are some quick facts about the flu vaccine:

  • The first flu vaccine was developed in the 1940s and was initially used to protect U.S. soldiers.

  • The flu virus changes often, which is why the vaccine is updated every year to match the most common strains.

  • Getting vaccinated helps protect not only you, but also those around you, like infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

  • Flu season usually runs from October to March. For the best protection, it’s recommended to get your shot by late September or early October.

Aside from the flu vaccine, August is a great time to catch up on any other routine vaccines. You can get most vaccines, including the flu shot, at your local pharmacy or doctor’s office. Taking a few moments to get vaccinated now can help keep you and your community healthy in the months ahead.
