Staying Healthy This Fall: Protecting Against Respiratory Viruses
As cooler weather arrives and we bundle up, more time is spent indoors, which allows respiratory viruses to spread more easily. The drop in humidity can also dry out nasal passages, lowering our natural defenses. In addition, less sunlight exposure means we produce less vitamin D, which supports immune health.
Now is the time to prepare your body for the colder season. While respiratory viruses can be mild, they may cause more severe illness in vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and those with chronic conditions. Common respiratory viruses include influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.
Here are three steps you can take today:
- Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations
Seasonal vaccines are updated each year to provide the best protection. Visit the CDC website for the latest information or ask your provider or pharmacist which vaccinations are recommended for you.
- Practice Everyday Prevention
Wash your hands often and cover coughs and sneezes. Limit close contact if you feel unwell or are around someone who is sick. Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces.
- Strengthen Your Immune System
Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night and manage stress. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and limit excess sugar. Stay hydrated and consider vitamin D or other supplements if recommended by your provider.
Small daily habits add up. By staying proactive this fall, you can strengthen your immune system and lower your risk of getting sick during this season.
